ICQ (I seek you) is a great little piece of software which allows you to chat to people directly over the Internet. It also allows you to know when a friend who is also using ICQ is online. A little green flower resides down on the bottom corner of your screen near the time which flashes when somebody sends you a message. Yahoo Chat is a chat facility which integrates itself within your web browser. This means that it's not necessary to download/install software as it uses Internet Explorer or Netscape as the chatting interface. It works in a similar fashion to IRC, where you can join rooms of significant interest. Yahoo also provide online games such as Chess & Hearts which can be lots of fun and a great subject to chat about.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is excellent when you want to chat to a lot of people at once. If you have had experience with Yahoo Chat, it can be described as nearly identical, but much much faster, since it's dedicated chat software. With IRC, you have the option to join rooms where you can find people with similar interests.
IRC is a standard rather than just a peice of software, so there are many variations to it available. For ease of use, we recommend MIRC.
