My modem keeps dialing without my Permission

If you find that your computer is automatically dialing the Internet without your permission there are some things that you can check to stop this.

• Some programs such as virus scanners have automatic updates that require Internet Access in order to complete these. You can turn this option off by going to the Settings of your Virus Scanner and turning the auto-update option off. (Unfortunately because all virus scanners are different IDL cannot provide a detailed description of how to edit your Virus Scanner software, but the manual that came with the software will tell you how, or alternately you can visit the manufacturers website).

• Other programs such as Music programs (mp3 players) or Chat software (ie ICQ) are notorious for this. You can also disable this using the options within the program.

• You can also turn off the ability for your computer to dial automatically, but you must keep in mind that you must establish your internet connection manually (you can do this by going into Dial-Up Networking and click the connection or just make a shortcut on your desktop.

This will prevent your computer from logging on automatically, but you will have to connect yourself when you want to use the Internet.
