IDL Internet News Archive 06/09/11 - Internet Bandwidth Upgrade Complete We have yet again effectively doubled our Internet capacity to ensure customers continue to take for granted just how good their IDL broadband service is :-) 01/09/11 - New ADSL Plans We have re-vamped our range of ADSL plans to include more megabytes and cheaper rates. New customers and existing customers re-signing a new contract are free to take up the new plans from the 1st of September! Call our office for full details. 01/06/11 - Decommissioning of NNTP Server On the 7th of June IDL will be decommissioning the news server. If you still require a nntp news service please use an alternative system such as http://groups.google.com or http://groups.yahoo.com 01/09/10 - More Gigabytes for ADSL Plans Great news for our ADSL users. Download and Upload limits have been massively increased. In some cases by as much as 5 times for the same price! Our most expensive plan has even dropped in price by $50! 30/08/10 - New Plans for IDL Wireless We have re-vamped our range of wireless plans to include more megabytes and cheaper rates. New customers and existing customers re-signing a new contract are free to take up the new plans from the 1st of September! Call our office for full details. 23/08/10 - Free Mailbox Size Upgrades Good news. We have increased the size of the mailboxes included with most of our plans by 5x at no extra cost. 08/06/10 - Mt Thorley Upgrade Complete We have just completed a substantial upgrade to our backhaul to Mt Thorley. The upgrade increases capacity and enable us to start providing services as fast as 10Mbit/sec! 24/05/10 - Wireless Network Upgrades Complete We have now effectively quadrupled our network capacity to Shortland, Warabrook, Thornton & surrounding suburbs. 21/01/10 - Unplug Equipment During Storms To avoid costly storm damage ADSL and Dialup customers should unplug their equipment from the power point AND the phone line. Wireless customers should disconnect the cable connecting your router/computer to the antenna and the power point. 11/05/09 - New Squirrel Mail Login In order to better protect our Webmail server from Internet hackers, our Webmail service now requires in addition to your IDL username and password that you also type in the letters shown in the on screen image. 20/04/09 - Updated Customer Access Pages You can now update your credit card details and make payments on our customer only website. 05/02/09 - Longer Sessions for Dialup Good news to our freedom unlimited dialup users. We have increased the session timeout to 6 hours. At no extra charge! 22/01/09 - Happy New Year Another year passes and IDL is still your locally owned ISP, still providing fast reliable Internet, still has a Newcastle call centre and we still need you! New plans are only available to customers re-signing or signing up for a minimum 12 month contract. 22/11/08 - New Wireless Prices We have already dropped the installation fee and more is to come. We are Moving on the 25th of FEB We are currently moving our office to bigger and better premises at Warabrook. The new address will be 1/4 Callistemon Close, Warabrook. We have completed the much anticipated expansion of our wireless network. Through the installation of two new towers we now cover most of Redhead, Mt Hutton, Edgeworth, New Lambton Hts & Charlestown. Customers in these areas no longer need to rely on their phone line for cutting edge, high speed broadband. 10/06/07 - Storm Update Primary connections have been restored and all services are functioning normally. 09/06/07 - Newcastle Natural Disaster Area Dialup servers have remained un-interrupted during and after the storms. The ADSL Broadband network is generally operational except for some specific exchanges and customers, this should be resolved in the next day or two. Our Wireless Broadband network is working normally for most users although operating on reduced capacity in most areas. 12/03/07 - New ADSL Plans Great News. We now provide phone support from 8am-7pm Week days and 9am-5pm on Saturdays. We are now utilising an additional filtering technique called Grey Listing which has seen an additional drop of about 60% in the amount of junk e-mails reaching our customers inbox. 04/10/06 - Link Upgrades We have just completed doubling the capacity of our direct Telstra connection. This will ensure continued fast access to the Telstra network and Telstra hosted websites. 04/07/06 - Celebrating 10 Years! Thanks to fantastic service, great support and of course you the customer we are now celebrating 10 years of being a successful locally owned and operated ISP. 17/01/06 - Upper Hunter Network Upgrades Network upgrades to our backbone network links all the way to Singleton are now complete. The fight against SPAM is an ongoing battle for all ISP’s, this latest step will most defiantly reduce the amount of junk e-mail’s reaching your inbox. 27/07/04 - New Virus A new variant of the "My Doom" Virus is currently spreading through the Internet; this may result in slower Internet Searching. This means faster downloads from most Australian sites and a better News feed. 20/05/04 - E-Mail Viruses I am sure you are aware of the recent rush of e-mail viruses. In an attempt to curb the spread of these viruses IDL like many other providers is now blocking access to port 25 on remote servers. If you have a need to access port 25 on remote servers please e-mail our helpdesk. 03/05/04 - Virus Warning - Worm_Sasser.A A new particularly nasty virus is currently loose on the Internet. Feel free to use the extra megabytes today. 01/12/03 - New Spam Prevention System Our new global spam prevention system is now online. It uses a combination of Internet black lists and aggressive address validation routines to keep them out. It is proving to be very effective. 19/11/03 - Paypal Virus (W32.Paylap worm ) WARNING: Another variation of the Mimail admin virus is circulating. The worm has the subject line of "YOUR PAYPAL.COM ACCOUNT EXPIRES" and contains an attachment named paypal.asp.scr. When run, this program asks for credit card information which it then sends to a remote server. DELETE this email immediately if you receive it, and as always, ensure your virus scanner is up to date. 14/08/03 - VIRUS: Blaster Worm Symatec have released a removal tool with full instructions on how to get rid of this nasty worm, to find out more, click here. And for instructions on how to prevent this worm click here. 04/08/03 - Warning: Mimail Worm WARNING: A new virus/worm is making its way around the Internet. It appears to come from admin@yourdomain (for IDL users it would appear to come from admin@idl.net.au). DO NOT open this e-mail, delete it immediately. 03/08/03 - Webhosting Agreement Updated Our web hosting agreement has been updated. 01/08/03 - New WebMail We are sporting a new web mail service called SquirrelMail, it is much faster and has features superior to that of the old one. One word of caution for users of our old web mail is that SquirrelMail does not have an "expunge" button meaning messages will be deleted immediately after choosing delete (a more logical feature anyway). Veteran users will also notice your address book has been carried across to the new system, but you will may want to check all your settings by clicking on the [Options] link in SquirrelMail. 28/07/03 - Unlimited Megabytes! Our Freedom Unlimited plan will included unlimited megabytes starting from the 1st of August 2003. Of course this is subject to our Acceptable Use Policy, but I am sure you will find this new plan exceptional value. 27/07/03 - AUP Update In order to cater for our new unlimited dialup plan with unlimited megabytes and hours we have updated our Acceptable Use Policy. This did NOT affect Internet connections in any way, however it did prevent you from calling our helpdesk. 27/02/03 - More Lines for Gosford Good news, we have just added more 56k lines in Gosford. 20/02/03 - More Maitland Wireless Coverage We now have a dedicated Maitland Wireless Repeater. This new site doesn’t extend coverage to any great extent but it does mean most Maitland customers will be able to access the service easily via a small, simple to install antenna. 27/01/03 - Slow Weekend Internet Access Due to a new virus infecting Microsoft SQL Server the internet is running very slow. Particulary since a number of IDL business customers have been infected. Keep in mind that most home users do not need to take any protective measures. Bronze @500Mb and Gold @3000Mb. 26/11/02 - Wireless Repeater for Black Hill Installation of our Wireless Repeater on Black Hill has been delayed due to technical problems. We are expecting it to be operational early next month. 04/10/02 - Virus Alert - W32.Bugbear@mm A new virus has hit Australian shores yesterday 03/10/02, it is called "W32.Bugbear" or "Bugbear" and is spread via e-mail and network shares. Once infected this Virus will disable your Virus Scannning and Firewall software and make your computer send random e-mails to random people, and in some cases, cause your e-mail program to fail. You can download a removal tool for the virus from Symantec.com, To prevent attacks such as these in the furture please ensure that you have a Virus Scanner and the "Virus Definitions" are up-to-date. 23/09/02 - More Hours for FREE! Good news, Starting October 2002 we are increasing the amount of hours included with our Easy Surfer plan from 10hrs to 15hrs. Excess hours have also decreased from $2.20 to $1.10 per hour. 13/09/02 - SPAM!! If you find your mailbox constantly filling up with junk e-mail (SPAM), IDL now has the solution for you. Click here for more information. 20/05/02 - Virus Hoax There is currently a virus hoax circulating the Internet which instructs the user to delete a file called "jdbgmgr.exe", this is a HOAX and deleting this file may cause Internet Explorer to stop working. Never delete any files, this is what virus scanners are for, let your virus scanner do the work. If you do not have a virus scanner or it is out-of-date now is as good as time as any to invest in one. If you have already deleted the file you can restore it by following the instructions here. 20/05/02 - SPAM (Junk) E-Mail If you find that you are receiving a lot of unwanted e-mails, you can stop this by forwarding the unwanted e-mail to spam@idl.com.au.
